LA MUSICA NON È FINITA: MARION CHARLET
“Never am I more active than when I do nothing,
and never am I less alone than when I am with myself.”
— Cato the Elder
A distant air… The echo of a celebration coming to an end, fragments of life suspended, friends have drifted away, and the space no longer quite belongs to us.
In these paintings, architecture becomes the setting for an encounter with oneself: a moment one grants oneself, a silent meeting between the image and the viewer, but also between the painter and the intimate pleasure of painting. Through these spaces, the viewer becomes a traveler, much like those on the Grand Tour of the 19th century—journeying not through cities or palaces, but through inner landscapes where every corner invites reverie. Here, wandering is no longer geographical; it becomes a celebration of dolce far niente.
These spaces evoke a deliberate withdrawal, a slowing of pace where attention can finally settle — like in a room of one’s own. Through their silence, they recall Absalon’s cells, those minimal architectures conceived as radically pared-down living spaces where tranquility becomes the very condition of existence. Under an almost Antonioni-like light, the floor ceases to be a mere surface and becomes a sensitive expanse through which the atmosphere of the painting diffuses. The walls do not confine: they organize a breathing space, a moment of weightlessness where the day gently shifts into a calmer temporality.
In this subtle suspension, painting creates a chosen moment in which space ceases to be merely constructed and becomes fully felt. Time stretches into an uncertain hic et nunc, and the space retains traces of recent presences: the languor of a shared moment, the wake of a body that has just left the scene, under a clear light that reveals every surface.
There remains an open silence,
like a breath in time.
The music has faded away,
yet it continues to drift,
somewhere offstage.
