Alfredo Jaar uses contemporary art to draw attention to a system that exploits both the land and human beings. But the art world itself is part of this system and lives off it. A contradiction that does not escape Jaar: “There is no way to live and create outside the system. But even if we depend on the world of finance and the economy or, at times, on the support of states, it is always a space of freedom where we can dream of a different world. We may not be able to change the world, but we can show that it can be different, that we can think differently.”
