Hannah De Corte is the recipient of a Getty Scholars Grant from the Getty Research Institute. In 2026, she will conduct a research project titled Tortured Pictures: Re-Reading Cubist Paintings in Light of Excessive Early Treatments.
Her research will explore the excessive manipulations by restorers of Cubist paintings in techniques now passé; with the best intentions in the world, it resulted in an aesthetic catastrophe. Georges Braque explains that he doesn't recognize certain parts of his paintings after treatment, and that the canvas became hard, not resonating as it used to.
