JOÃO FREITAS Portugal, b. 1989
Overview
Born in 1989 in Coimbra, João Freitas arrived in Brussels in 2009 to study drawing in La Cambre. Today he lives and works in Luxembourg and Brussels.
Whether through wear, sanding or burning, the crease, the sewing, or the crumpled, João Freitas reveals the material by making it transcendent. The artist carries out a repetitive, almost meditative work of abduction, cutting, tearing, and scratching, which reveals the underlying reality.
In 2015, Freitas won the Young Talent Prize during the Art On Paper course and subsequently exhibited at the BOZAR. He exhibited in 2020 at the Centre Tour cultural centre in Plomb (Brussels). The work of João Freitas is part of private and public collections such as that of the Belgian collector Galila Barzilaï-Hollander and that of the film producer and collector of contemporary art Frédéric de Goldschmidt or the collection of the Fondation Carrefour des Arts or the City of Dudelange.
