IRINA RASQUINET Russia, b. 1974
Overview
Irina Rasquinet is a Russian artist born in 1974 in Chechnya. Growing up in a war-torn country, she defines herself as an artist with “vacant roots”. She attended an experimental art school in Moscow, Russia. She moved to Paris in 1997 to join the School of Decorative Arts in Paris.
Irina Rasquinet creates monumental sculptures as well as fantastical and colourful jewellery. Her work is imprinted with a childlike gaze and spontaneity. The artist perceives French expressions with poetry and surrealism, diverting them into imaginative puns. With works entitled Roule-moi une pelle (2007), Terre à Terre (2008), Langue de bois (2008) or Nature (sus)pendue (2008), Irina Rasquinet takes a playful look at these expressions. She makes them resonate with various themes such as love, identity or nature.
In 2006, Irina Rasquinet performed Diamond Market at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris. Since 2008, she has been part of the Charles Firmenich Collection. For her work La Nature malmené exhibited in the Château de la Bourdaisière park in Tours, France, she won the 2009 Ar(t)bres Award. She joined the David Holder Private Collection in 2011. That same year, she directed a WWF Exhibition in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2016, she presented Mère veilleuse, an installation located at Domaine des Étangs, collection Garance Primat, Massignac, France.
