TRONG GIA NGUYEN Vietnam, b. 1971

Overview
Trong Gia Nguyen, a Vietnamese and American artist currently based in Brussels, was born in 1971 in Saigon, Vietnam.

Trong Gia Nguyen examines the different power structures. Sometimes on the tone of humour and sometimes more soberly, the artist questions our spaces of trust, whether they concern the domestic, cultural, political or economic. He works exclusively with an iPhone, creating installations, films, paintings, sculptures, performances and interventions on the Internet. Among other things, he created sculptures using 3D printing.

Between 2005 and 2007, he founded and directed New General Catalog in Brooklyn—a gallery presenting emerging and disadvantaged artists with an experimental artistic identity. Trong Gia Nguyen has participated in more than 25 exhibitions as a curator.

Trong Gia Nguyen regularly participates in solo or collaborative exhibitions. He exhibited at the Freies Museum in Berlin, Germany, in 2010; Housatonic Museum of Art in Connecticut, USA, in 2013; Piazzale Valdo Fusi in Turin, Italy, in 2015; Vincom Center for Contemporary Art in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2017. In 2018, at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum in Florida, USA. He exhibited at the Orange County Museum of Art in California, USA, the same year.

"Generally my projects provide an easy entry point of recognizable objects, but from there it’s a small journey that the artwork and viewer hopefully takes together. A dialogue ensues, and an equal “give-and-take” relationship is demanded from both. At its best, art worth experiencing should be challenging and take things to task."
