Lucy + Jorge Orta form a collaborative artist duo. Lucy Orta was born in 1966 in the UK, she graduated in 1989 with a degree in design and began plastic art in 1992. Jorge Orta was born in Argentina in 1953, he studied fine arts and architecture.
Lucy + Jorge Orta are polyvalent artists who employ mediums such as drawing, sculpture, sewing, painting, serigraphy, photography, video, ephemeral interventions and performances. They question the role of the artist, considering him to be an actor in society, not a superficial observer. The Orta's explore, ecological subjects, among other things.
In parallel to their practice, Lucy + Jorge Orta founded Les Moulins, near Paris, an artistic research centre to enhance industrial heritage through contemporary art.
Lucy + Jorge Orta have exhibited in many international venues, including The Curve, Barbican Art Gallery, London (2005); Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice (2005); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2006); Biennial of the End of the World, Ushuaia, Antarctic Peninsula (2007); Hangar Bicocca spazio d'arte, Milan (2008); Natural History Museum, London (2010); MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts, Rome (2012); Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2013); Parc de la Villette, Paris (2014) and Ben Maltz Gallery, Los Angeles museum.
The artists received the Green Leaf Award in 2007. They received an award from the United Nations Environmental Programme in partnership with the Natural World Museum at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, for their impactful environmental messages. For their work Meteoros, made for St Pancras International Station in London, they received in 2013 the inaugural commission of Terrace Wires, public and monumental art.
